Mary Helen Cliette Houey

Mrs. Mary Helen Cliette Houey, 73, of 1310 Frederick Street, Shelby, NC passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC.

 

The daughter of Robert Cecil and Jenny Mae Eaves Smith, Helen was born in Shelby, NC on July 7, 1938.  She attended Washington High School where she was class Salutatorian and was very active in high school as a member of numerous clubs and participated in several extracurricular activities including basketball.  She later attended Winston-Salem State University as a scholar.

 

Helen was a lifelong member of Shiloh Baptist Church.  She served a five year term as church Treasurer.  She was also a choir member and served on many church task forces during her more than seven decade membership.  Helen was very grounded in her faith and the church was an integral component of her life.

 

Helen was a consummate entrepreneur.  She was the owner and operator of Salon 360˚, and was a 40 year Avon Representative and President’s Club Member.  Her entrepreneurial spirit also extended to 20 years of real estate investing and developing.  In addition, she was a nurse at Cleveland Memorial Hospital and a retired Celanese Employee.

 

Helen was a member of the Round Dozens Book Club and she was Vice President of the Annie Jones Mission Group.  She was also an avid supporter and member of the Women’s Police Auxiliary Club and served as Co-Chairperson of the Strong Family Reunion Committee for multiple years as well.

 

 

Helen was a lover of people, a committed Christian, family focused leader, and she had an exceptional personality with a smile that could light up a room.  She was always available for friends and family with a soft heart and a generous disposition.  She enjoyed working out, friendly lunches and dinners, flower gardening, family gatherings and functions that supported worthy causes. 

 

She affected so many lives in a positive way and we are grateful to had had her for the time that she graced us with her presence here on earth.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James Louis Cliette; two sisters, Betty Smith Pagan and Margie Smith and two brothers, Joseph Smith and Robert Lee Smith.

 

She is survived by her husband, Emanuel Houey; three daughters, Katrina Smith of Charlotte, NC, Michelle Smith of Atlanta, GA and Anita Cliette of Shelby; two step-sons, Richard Cliette, (Patricia) of Wilmington, NC and George Cliette (Angela) of Durham, NC; a grandson, Kendall Prescott Smith of Chapel-Hill, NC; three brothers, David Smith of South Norwalk, Conn, Billy Smith (Hattie) and Herbert Daniels both of Kings Mountain, NC; a sister, Mary Ann Stiles and her children, Rhonda Chin, Monique Stiles, JR Stiles and Rockelle Stiles all of Indianapolis, IN; niece, Veronica Smith of Gastonia, NC; her mother-in-law, Lorene Houey of Gaffney, SC; a brother-in-law, Leonard Houey of Gaffney; sisters-in-law, Patricia Manning (J.P.), Annie Houey, Sandra Houey, Sheila Bryson all of Gaffney and Brenda McLaughlin (Al) of Columbia, SC and host of additional nieces, nephews, extended family and close friends.

 

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 1:30 PM at Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Danté Murphy officiating.  Burial will take place at Sunset Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 1:30 PM on Friday at the church.  Mrs. Houey will be  available for view from 12:00 Noon until 1:00 PM on Friday at the church.  Condolences can be expressed online at www.enloes.nets.  Enloe Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
