Master Sergeant Wilford Cephas Morris

Master Sergeant Wilford Cephas Morris (USAF, Retired), age 85, died peacefully on December 27, 2017. Born in Kings Mountain, NC, May 1, 1932, he was the son of the late William Cephas Morris and Bertha Laughter Morris.

Will is preceded in death by his faithful companion and loving wife of 62 years, Opal VanHoose Morris. He is also preceded by his infant grandson, Thompson Morris Gammons. He is survived by three proud and grateful daughters; Dr. Grace Morris of Charlotte, Annette Morris of Charlotte, Jayne Morris Gammons and her husband Dr. Keith Gammons and grandson Eliot Gammons of Macon, GA. The oldest of five children, he is also survived by his sister, Judy Black of Central, SC.

After graduating from Ellenboro High School and working as a weaver in a textile mill, Will entered the Air Force in 1951. He served 20 years as a computer programmer while stationed in the United States, Philippines and Europe. He retired as a Master Sergeant in 1971, upon which time he received the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service.

In 1972, with "little more than faith and good work ethics," Will and Opal opened All American Fabrics, a successful fabric and furniture business in Shelby, NC for more than 20 years. In a letter to their grandson, they share that they "truly succeeded in achieving their American dream."

Christian discipleship and church membership were always important to Will. Through his life he served on and led numerous committees, taught classes, sang in the choir, served as a deacon, and started congregations. While a member at First Baptist Church in Shelby, NC, he was a choir member and Sunday school teacher.

Over the years, Will also participated in many organizations including Optimist Club and the Greater Shelby Community Theatre. He competed in mixed doubles badminton at the National Senior Games. Together, Will and Opal had many adventures as they sang together, started businesses, played golf and traveled to 49 states.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel with Dr. Robert Black officiating. The funeral will be followed by a time to receive friends. A graveside service will take place at Cleveland Memorial Park following visitation with full military honors.

Will had a generous spirit and gratefulness for the financial blessings that resulted from his hard work and he would often give to friends and family who had need. Therefore, the family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Deacon Fund of Providence Presbyterian Church, 10140 Providence Church Lane, Charlotte, NC 28277.
