Maynard Hassel Philbeck

Maynard Hassel Philbeck completed the voyage of life on August 27, 2015 at his home in the company of his loving family. Born November 2, 1933, he was one of 3 children born to Paul and Naomi Philbeck and grew up on the family farm during the post-depression years in the New House Community of Cleveland County, North Carolina. He attended Lattimore School (now Ambassador Baptist College) and graduated in 1951. Upon entering the Navy the same year, he trained in San Diego, California, and after schooling in Bainbridge, Maryland, became a hospital corpsman stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He later reported for sea duty in the Pacific aboard the USS Askari. Upon completing his duties in the Navy in 1954, Maynard attended Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. and was instructed by noted American portraitist Edmund Archer. In 1960, he became Art Director for Army Times Publishing Company. Marrying Evelyn Huston in 1961, the couple purchased a home, had 4 children and resided in Washington D.C. until August 20, 1970 when Maynard decided to move back to ancestral land in the Rehobeth Methodist Church community of Cleveland County, N.C. Here, he decided to return to his farming roots and became a commercial chicken farmer until 1985. Maynard was a gifted artist who enjoyed painting landscapes and portraits as well as a writer with several unpublished books including Search for the Sun People, People of the Sea, The Halifax Project, Wilhelm Ernst Felbach and North Carolina Descendants(self-published), plus numerous smaller works. He was a creative thinker, passionate about history, archaeology; stamp collecting, gardening and lover of life.

Maynard was the father of 5 children: Lane, Kurt, Bret, Phillip, and Renée and was an active participant in their upbringing. He faithfully attended Rehobeth United Methodist Church for 33 years(1980-2013) until his health did not allow for regular attendance. Preceding him in death were parents Paul and Naomi, brothers James Paul and Max Ray, and a son, Kurt William(age 15). Surviving in the immediate family include wife, Evelyn, son Lane and wife Kathy and their 4 children Kurt, Ross, Paul, and Shelby of Kingston, Massachusetts; son Bret and 2 children Amanda and Rebecca; son Phillip and wife Leigh, and daughter Donna Renée of Charlotte plus numerous surviving treasured relatives. Our family gives heartfelt thanks to Hospice of Cleveland County(Joanie Mabry, Rev. Janice Cooper, Cheree Wilson, and Lynda Davis) for the material and compassionate care they provided during Maynard's final days.
