Melvin Smith

SHELBY: Melvin Smith, 83, died Sunday, February 4, 2018, at Carolinas Continue Care Hospital in Kings Mountain. He was born in Brazos Co., TX, to the late Robert and Sally Petty Smith. He proudly served his country in the US Navy, which led to his love for travel. He was good with his hands and could fix anything. He was witty with a great sense of humor. Most will remember him as the maintenance man from the Days Inn.

PRECEDED: In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Smith, Jr.; sister, Thelma Smith, as well as a baby sister.

SURVIVED: He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mercelene Smith, of the home; sons, Glenn Smith and wife Tina of South Boston, VA; and William Smith and wife Cheryl of Ellensville, NY; sisters Alperal Moore, Dorothy Washington and husband James, both of Houston, TX., "Red" Dorothy Smith, Gloria Smith, and Haddie Allen, all of College Station, TX.; brother James Smith and wife Penny of Dickenson, TX.; seven grandchildren; godchildren, Cheryl Watkins and Michael Harrison; sister-in-law, Mary Bolling of Durham, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL SERVICES: Will be held Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at 1:00pm, in the chapel of Clay-Barnette Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home.

OFFICIATING: Rev. Herman Dade will officiate
