Michael "Mike" Phillip Gammons

Michael "Mike" Phillip Gammons, born in Galveston, Texas, to Willard Thompson Gammons and Laura Myrtle Reamy Gammons, passed away surrounded by his beloved family.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Linda, his children Jeff (Chris), Keith (Danielle), and Julie Scott (Jarrod), six grandchildren--Molly Giordano (Anthony), Noah (Lily), Eliot, Karissa, Evan, and Canaan--his brother Jim (Cissy), and brother-in-law Charles Pyron (Rose). In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his grandson, Thompson Morris Gammons.


Mike's early life as the son of a career Air Force officer took him across the country before settling in Montgomery, Alabama, where he met Linda, the love of his life. They married in 1962 and began a lifelong journey together. A proud graduate of the University of Alabama, Mike earned both his BA and MA in Statistics.

In 1966, the family settled in Shelby, North Carolina, where Mike began a distinguished career with PPG Industries, retiring as Director of Quality Control for the Fiberglass Division. He later worked with Underwriters Laboratories and consulted extensively on ISO 1000 standards.

A dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Shelby, Mike served as a deacon, Sunday school director, and committee leader. He was also the driving force in local Habitat for Humanity blitz builds and assisting in the Host Committee for the American Legion World Series and served as Past president of the Exchange Club and the Shelby Aquatics Club.

In 2021, Mike and Linda moved to Raleigh and became members of Green Pines Baptist Church. Mike treasured time spent with his family, traveling, and enjoying getaways to Hilton Head. Known as "Papa Mike" to his grandchildren, he will be remembered for his love, dedication, and unwavering support.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, January 16, 2025 in the Chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with Rev. Perry Holleman and Rev. Jarrod Scott officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM. Burial will follow the service at Cleveland Memorial Park.
