Nancy Lucille Bowles

Nancy Lucille Bowles, grew up in Garden City, Long Island, New York. She was the daughter of the late Lucille and Ray Bowles. She was born in 1935 and died peacefully at home on January 26, 2023.

She is survived by her brothers, Richard Morgan Bowles and Lawrence Thompson Bowles. In addition to her parents, Nancy is preceded in death by her brother, Robert Wickizer Bowles.

In 1985 she graduated from Duke University and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority while there. She went on to New York University where she earned a Doctorate in Psychology from the Graduate School of Arts and Science. In 1980, she became a Fellow of the American Psychology Association. Her professional career took her to New York for a period of time and then to Boston, ultimately retiring to Shelby in 1996. She lectured extensively in the U.S. and Europe. Nancy was a member of Mensa, the largest and oldest high IQ society in the world.

Nancy faced her illness with both grace and courage, leading a full and successful life, making friends wherever she went. In later years her great interest was duplicate bridge, becoming the director of the Shelby group for an extended period.

A visitation will be held Thursday, February 2nd, from 3 pm to 5 pm, at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home & Crematory.

Memorials may be offered to Shelby Presbyterian Church, 226 E Graham St, Shelby, NC 28150.
