National Junior Golf Event Comes To Shelby
Chad Cox, a rising senior at Hickory Grove Christian School in Charlotte, N.C.
The American Junior Golf Association will travel to Shelby, N.C., to conduct the Cleveland HealthCare Foundation Junior, July 18-21. The 54-hole stroke play event will be held at Deer Brook Golf Club and will feature 144 junior golfers, ages 12-18, from around the country.
Prior to the start of the tournament, a TaylorMade-adidas Golf Qualifier will be held at River Bend Golf Club, Sunday, July 17, starting at 1 p.m. TaylorMade-adidas Golf Qualifiers give juniors an opportunity to “play their way in” to each coinciding AJGA Open tournament or build status for entry into a future event. The TaylorMade-adidas Golf Qualifier Series offers opportunities for AJGA juniors at approximately 50 AJGA Open events.
During the tournament week, some of the top juniors who will be participating in the Cleveland HealthCare Foundation Junior will also take part in the Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament Monday, July 18. The Junior-Am will be an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start at Deer Brook Golf Club.
An excellent opportunity to entertain clients, reward employees or enjoy a tournament round with some friends, the Junior-Am allows amateurs to play a competitive round of golf with future stars of the game. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Davis Love III, Justin Leonard, Charles Howell III, Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel and Grace Park are just a few of the thousands of talented players who participated in AJGA Junior-Ams when they were teenagers.
Supporting golf at the grassroots level, Junior-Ams allow the AJGA to make contributions to local junior golf charities and programs in hosting communities. In 2011, the proceeds of the Cleveland HealthCare Foundation Junior Junior-Am will benefit The First Tee of Cleveland County. To participate, contact Becky Wall at (980) 487-3028.
The tournament practice round will be a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start on Monday, July 18, and tournament rounds will be played July 19-21. First- and second-round tee times will run off Nos. 1 and 10 tees from 7 – 9 a.m. (first wave) and noon – 2 p.m. (second wave). After a 36-hole cut, the final round will go off Nos. 1 and 10 tees from 7 – 9:20 a.m. on Thursday, July 21. An awards ceremony will take place following the final round at 2 p.m. Spectators are welcome to attend and admission is free of charge.
Founded in 2006, the Cleveland County Sports Commission’s mission is to develop the sports industry in Cleveland County, foster economic development through sports, build an understanding in the county of the importance of sports and recruit and create sports events that have a positive economic impact on the county.
The Cleveland HealthCare Foundation’s mission is to enable the community to support programs and services on injury prevention healthcare and wellness for the region. The foundation supports a healthy community by providing a way for people to help their neighbors access healthcare programs.
The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 40 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.
Titleist, the AJGA’s National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association’s success since 1989. Rolex, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA’s second Premier Partner.
AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 500 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Inbee Park and Morgan Pressel.
