National Recovery Month Celebrated
Tanzy Wallace, Kathy Allen, Melissa Moose and Miriam Lackey.
Carolina DWI Services celebrated the 25th Anniversary of National Recovery Month by hosting an event at the LeGrand Center on September 11th.
Sixty-seven people within the community showed up to watch the documentary “The Anonymous People”. The event was attended by professionals in the substance abuse field, Gardner-Webb students, members at large in the anonymous community and County Commissioner Jason Falls and Candidate for Sheriff Carl Jensen. The focus of the event was to advocate for people in recovery: to speak up, reach out and to be the voices for recovery. Kathy Allen, Director of Carolina Services said “We hosted the event to start a change in Cleveland County. Recovery does happen. We have hundreds of people living in long term recovery here in our county. This means that they have not used alcohol or drugs in a very long time. We must advocate for the people with the disease of addiction and get them the help they need whether it be inpatient services, outpatient services or self help like AA, CA, NA and Celebrate Recovery. With all the codependency we see, our county needs an Al-Anon. We must come together as a community to see the change. Addiction is a disease like diabetes and must start treating it as such and help heal the brain.”
The Anonymous People is available on Netflix, you can download it and watch. You can call Kathy Allen, 980-230-9967 for the next viewing information.
