Otis Archie Young

Otis Archie Young, age 64 of 2330 Mason Street, Shelby, NC transitioned from his earthly body to his heavenly body on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at Atrium Health Hospital in Shelby, North Carolina.

He was born on August 26, 1959, to the late Shirley Ann Young and Archie Dell Young in Shelby, North Caolina.

Otis graduated from Crest High School with the class of 1978, where he was known for his extraordinary basketball skills. After high school, he went on to play at Wingate University for a year even though he did not complete his college education his love for the game just intensified. In Shelby and his community of Light Oak, he was known as a "LOC Legend" due to his skills on and off the court. He taught many about the game mentally and fundamentally, as well as how to spin and hook the player at the same time.

Otis worked over 40 years in the textile industry, and trucking industry, however working long hours never stopped him from playing a game of basketball with whomever showed up to play. He was known for his backyard court, that many legends of Shelby played on and lost to Otis during their time on that court. His children and nephews even lost to him on the court, his philosophy was "You have to earn a win, I am not going to give you a win."

Otis was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church, which is his family's home church. Otis was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and cousin. His parents spoiled him rotten, and that he carried on to his own girls that he loved dearly. Otis was an early bird, and he would wake up the neighborhood with that brown van he drove for many years. He loved to cook, clean, spend time with his family, and watch the Dallas Cowboys who he loved, even when they were not playing up to par. He was a father who made sure you sat down at the kitchen table and finished your homework, and it was right before you were allowed to leave the table to go outside and play.

Otis is preceded in death by his mother Shirley Ann Young, his grandparents, and a host of aunts and uncles.

Left to cherish his memories is his wife of 40 years Oveta Young, his four daughters, Michele Willis of Gastonia, Sheena "Nikki" Hunter (Anzelle) of Grover, Misty Smith (Travis) of Crowders Mountain, and Tamisha Garner of Grover.
