Outdoor Truths: Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ March 1st
What a great time of the year! It’s March Madness, which for me means basketball, fishing, and turkey season. It has to be one of the most testosterone filled months of they year. Can I get an ARRRRGHHH from all of the pickup drivin’, gun toten’, camouflage wearin’ men in the house? There’s nothing like clean fun!
It seems now-a-days that we hunters are looked at a little different by some folks. I find myself being stared at by those who don’t like the fact that I cover my truck with hunting stickers and wear around my “will hunt for food,” shirt. For some reason they want me to be ashamed that I’m the one who provides the leather for the seats of the exotic car they drive and for the shoes they wear. Try to offer them genuine Naugahyde and see what they say.
Now many folks seem to think that we outdoor types are ignorant and uneducated when it comes to the finer things in life. And surely our sport is barbaric. Now I don’t know about all of that, but I do know that I have to wait in line at the Outback while they’re eating some fine steaks that came from a dead cow. Have you ever heard of “distressed” leather? Heck, I thought it was all distressed. I’ve never known of a cow that gave up their hide willingly! No, he was distressed when he gave it up. And what is it with those who are afraid to have a gun in the house? What’s up with that? They’re afraid of having such a thing around the “children.” What if an accident happens? Well with that logic we need to take out all of the electrical outlets in the house as well. Not only are they dangerous but there’s at least two or three in every room. No, the answer is not to remove stuff that we don’t understand or that we’re afraid of, but the answer is to be educated about the proper use and purpose of everything. I don’t rub my dead deer in people’s face and I do want to be considerate. But I’m also not ashamed of being a hunter and a fisherman.
Some folks are equally uneasy about those of us who call ourselves Christians. They’re stand-off-ish. Some don’t understand, and some are afraid. The truth is we’re just like everyone else; No worse and no better. We’ve just found something that satisfies our thirst for purpose. To some it may seem barbaric, but to those of us who live it, it’s the only lifestyle that we could ever choose. To give it up would be like trying to give up hunting or fishing. And I could never do that.
