Outdoor Truths: Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ Oct. 18th
It is known that one of the catalysts that bring on the deer rut is the shortening of daylight hours. I’m not sure what that specifically has to do with the process, but again it is one of a number of factors that determine that special time of year. And even though it makes for great deer hunting, it hinders just about every other part of my living. I mean I don’t know of many people who prefer 8 or 9 hours of daylight and 15 or 16 hours of darkness. I know that different parts of the country (and world) have different scenarios but this is how many of us live during the winter. I don’t mind the mornings but I seem to want to go to bed at about 7 o’clock each night. The hunting also becomes more difficult because it keeps most of the working force at home until the weekend. Right now, one can squeeze in an afternoon hunt, but soon that will be impossible. But it is what it is, and we all must learn to adapt, improvise, and overcome. (Thanks Clint)
This precise characteristic of creation is not without purpose. As does everything God makes, He has infused this particular design with a spiritual word for all who will choose to look more intently. Remember, God didn’t create anything “just for the heck of it,” and it is the same here. So what did Jesus say about this light and dark thing, that this upcoming season should remind us of? He said, “We must work the works of Him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” (John 9) This is true in so many ways. First of all, I am realizing more every day that my own time on earth is limited. In fact, while I am not in my twilight years, I have lived more than half of my life according to all the life expectancy charts. The night is coming. This ceasing of light also reminds me of my priorities. While I may think that I have plenty of time to do what needs to be done, the truth is I shouldn’t put off doing the right things and making a lasting and worthwhile impact in the area God has called me. And then I am reminded that I am living in a society where the darkness of secularism is overtaking the “Light of the world.” There will come a time, (and is all but here) when the message of Christ will fall on deaf ears. My friend, Creation has given us another sign. If you are a hunter, you need to be the first to recognize it, change whatever it is in your life that needs to be changed, and pass on the message that you have learned – before the night comes.
