Paddling The First Broad River
A group of outdoor enthusiasts, concerned citizens and land owners paddled the First Broad River recently. The group included supporters of the Foothills Conservancy and members of Catawba Valley Outing Club. The First Broad is a beautiful, ancient river with lots of turns, a sandy bottom and moss covered rock outcroppings. The riverbanks are filled with trees and vegetation. The Cleveland County Water District wants to harness the waters of this river by placing a dam near Lawndale, NC, which would create a sinewy 24-mile reservoir that would flood 1500 acres of woods and farmland. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has recommended that building a reservoir is not the best option for maintaining water supply to the area.
