Peggy Ann Bingham Costner

Peggy Ann Bingham Costner, affectionately known as Nanny, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 29, 2024, at Wendover Hospice House, at the age of 92. Born on May 28, 1932, in Cleveland County, Peggy's life was characterized by her loving nature, gentle spirit, and unwavering faith.

Peggy's journey began as the cherished daughter of Fearmon Bingham and Addie McSwain Bingham. Her early years in Cleveland County laid the foundation for a life filled with love and commitment to family. Peggy's heart found its match in Joe Donald Costner, Sr., and together they built a life rich in shared experiences and joy. Their union was blessed with longevity, spanning 64 beautiful years until Joe's passing.

A devoted mother, Peggy's legacy continues through her son, Joe "Chuck" Costner, Jr. and his wife Jean of Fallston, and her daughter, Rita Hendrick of Cherryville. Her nurturing love extended to her four grandchildren, Joe "Donnie" Costner, III and his wife Stephanie of Fallston, Tracy Lowie and her husband James of Honea Path, SC, Christy Edwards and her husband Jed of Malabar, FL, and Jenny Tysinger and her husband Joey of Fallston. Nanny's joy was multiplied with the arrival of each of her twelve great-grandchildren: Joseph, Emma, Gus, Elijah, Meah, Alex, Isaiah, Sam, Jacob, Jud, Jeremiah, and Max. She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in her heart.

Before her retirement, Peggy was a familiar face at Stamey Stores, where her work ethic and warm personality were appreciated by all. Her professional life, however, was always balanced with her role as a farmer's wife, where she contributed with equal dedication and love.

Peggy's interests painted the picture of a woman who cherished the simple pleasures in life. Sunday afternoons were sacred, reserved for family gatherings and the enjoyment of desserts, a testament to her belief in the importance of togetherness and sweet treats. Her home was a haven of comfort and joy, where laughter and stories were shared, and memories were made.

Those who knew Peggy will remember her as a beacon of love and kindness. Her gentle demeanor was a source of comfort to many, and her faith-filled life was an inspiration. Peggy walked through life with a quiet strength that drew others to her, and her influence will be felt for generations to come.

Peggy is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe Donald Costner, Sr., her parents, Fearmon and Addie Bingham, her sister Patsy Ruth Bingham, and her son-in-law, Timothy Hendrick. Her departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved her, but her spirit will forever be woven into the fabric of their lives.

As we bid farewell to Nanny, we celebrate a life well-lived, a matriarch cherished, and a legacy that will endure. Her story is one of love's triumph and the beauty of a life anchored in faith and family. May she rest in peace, knowing that she was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at Pleasant Grove Baptist on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Toby Bird officiating.

The family will hold a reception following the service in the church fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers Memorials may be made to Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150 or to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 3932 Pleasant Grove Ch. Rd., Shelby, NC 28150.
