Peggy Hicks Shytle Wallace

Peggy Hicks Shytle Wallace, 81, born on July 28, 1931, in Spartanburg County SC,  to the late Wade Winfield and Sarah Elizabeth Queen Hicks, died at Hospice Wendover on January 15, 2013.

Until her health failed her, Peggy was active in the life of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church, singing alto in the Chancel Choir, engaging in the Bykota Sunday School Class discussions, and participating in the activities of the Friendship Circle.  Throughout the years, she served on a variety of committees, but her chairing the "food groups," now called the Bereavement committee, for decades allowed her to utilize her cooking talent--a talent that brought immense pleasure to many and gave her relief from the stress of being unable to sleep at night.  She also shared her culinary art on two mission trips sponsored by the church and with family, neighbors, and friends who needed some "comfort" food.

Peggy was a social being and a loving person.  She enmeshed herself while she was able in the activities of the Senior Center.  She often played bingo Monday night, sang in the seniors' choir, and participated in the meals, the dances, and fundraising projects.  She enjoyed traveling with her family, on tours, or with a friend or two, with the beach (particularly her brother's place) ranking as her favorite place to go.  Perhaps her most memorable trip was the one with her son and his wife to China to get their adopted daughter.  Peggy intertwined her life with that of her family and friends, offering home-cooked meals, entertaining with games, and encouraging conversational give and take.  There was never a dull moment at her home, whether it was on Grice Street or at Northgate Apartments.

Peggy was employed at Belk's in Shelby for 36 years, at the cosmetic counter, where she perfected the skills of applying make-up and caring for the face.  In this position she also served as a buyer for Belk's. She worked at Betty Jo's Florist where she learned to arrange flowers - this was another one of her talents.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her daughter Mickey Shytle;  and her husband’s Bill Shytle and Max Wallace.

Peggy is survived by her only living daughter, Janet Shytle; her three sons; Steve and wife Diane Shytle from Gastonia, Todd and wife Mandy Shytle and Joel and wife Diane Shytle, both from Charlotte.  Her grandchildren include Stephen and wife Stephanie Shytle, Aaron and wife Angel Shytle, Joanne Shytle, Carmen Shytle and Lia Shytle; the great-grandchildren are A. J., Savannah Grace, and William.  Phil Hicks and his wife Janet are also left to cherish the memory of his only sibling.

The Family wishes to thank Frances Kiser for her heartfelt, loving friendship to our mother and the care she showed her during her life.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday January 19, 2013 at 11:00 am at Lafayette Street United Methodist Church with Dr. Tom Steagald and Rev. Stephen Shytle officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10;00 until 11:00 am an hour before the service.

Memorials can be made to Hospice Cleveland County, 950 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC or Lafayette Street united Methodist Church, 1420 South Lafayette Street, Shelby, NC 28152.
