Rebecca Cook

Rebecca Cook, known affectionately by her friends and family as Becky, passed away peacefully on May 29th, 2023 in her beloved hometown of Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Born on the 21st of July, 1940 to the late Floyd and Margaret Patterson Thornburg, she lived a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to her community.

Becky's educational journey led her to Kings Business College, where she cultivated the skills that would later serve her in her many roles throughout her life. In the 1960's and 1970's, she was an integral part of the Cleveland County Board of Elections, later ascending to the role of Chair of Kings Mountain Elections where she served throughout the 1980's and 1990's. Her commitment to her community was further exemplified through her part-time work at Kings Mountain High School Cafeteria in the 1970's and she also worked for over 25 years with Hilda Moss Tax Service.

A woman of many talents, Becky was a gifted seamstress for more than 30 years, her hands rarely idle as she crafted clothing for herself, her family, and the wider public. Her creativity knew no bounds, as she also dabbled in wreath making, cake decorating, and crocheting, to name but a few of her many crafty pursuits.

Becky's dedication to service was a defining force in her life, as she directed weddings, helped establish the Cleveland Vocational Industries, Inc. (CVII) workshop for the physically and mentally challenged, and served on various boards including CVII, Pathways, and Pathway Consumer Rights. As a hospice volunteer and a meal deliverer with Central United Methodist Church, she touched the lives of many with her generosity and courage.

A steadfast member of First Baptist Church in Kings Mountain since 1962, Becky served as a Sunday School teacher and was most recently involved in Golden Fellowship. Her faith was a guiding light in her life, and her unwavering devotion to her church community was an inspiration to all who knew her.

Becky was predeceased by her loving husband, Ken, and her cherished daughter, Terrie. She is survived by her devoted son, Tracy, and his wife, Ellen Cook, of Satsuma, Alabama, and her loving daughter, Tammy, and her husband, John Mann, of Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Her adored grandsons, Tyler (wife Whitney), Elliott, and Vince, and great-grandsons, Ty and Bo, will forever remember her as "Grand" and "Wheeta," a testament to the special bond she shared with them.

In the words of the great bard William Shakespeare, "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players." Becky's time on this stage was filled with love, laughter, and an unwavering dedication to her family, her community, and her faith. She was a woman who was generous, courageous, and creative, who did not shy away from sharing her opinions and telling it like it is. Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those she touched, and her memory will serve as a guiding light for generations to come.
