Richard Samuel Hord

Richard Samuel Hord, 92, of Lawndale, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2019
at Peak Resources in Shelby.

Born in Cleveland County he was a son of the late Thomas Buford Hord and
Cora Bertha McKinney Hord. He was the owner and operator of Hord's Service
Station for twenty-five years and was also a retired USPS mail carrier.
Richard was an active member of Lawndale United Methodist Church having
served as a Trustee and working with the United Methodist Men. He was
instrumental in the formation of Lawndale Fire Department as well as serving
as the first fire chief, which he held for twenty-one years. He would then
move on and serve the Town of Lawndale on the town council for four years
and as its mayor for nineteen years. He was also a member of the Lawndale
Masonic Lodge #486 for sixty seven years, Lawndale Lions Club, trustee for
UCAN, Upper Cleveland Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and the
Economic Development Commission for Cleveland County.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a son, Dick Hord;
brother, Tom Hord; and three sisters, Bertie Lee Cabiness, Stella Crowder
and Annie Pearl Hord.

He is survived by his wife of seventy-four years Betty Lee Hord; two
daughters, Sandy Melton and husband Bob of Shelby and Betsy Jones and
husband Mark of Boiling Springs; daughter-in-law, Jane Hord of Lawndale; six
grandchildren, Cindy Sain (Greg), Tammy Hollifield (Dennis), Richard Hord,
III (Jackie), Megan Gorski (David), Charlie Jones (Jamie), and Michelle
Shook (Billy); great grandchildren, Casey Harmon (Brad), Alex Hollifield
(Ben Kees), Anna Caroline & Will Gorski, Aubrey & Remy Shook; and a
great-great-grandson, Wyatt Harmon.

A celebration of life service will be held on 3:00PM Wednesday at First
United Methodist Church of Lawndale with the Rev. Keith Sherrill
officiating. Masonic rites will also be performed at the conclusion of the
service.

A reception for friends and family will follow the service from 4:30PM until
6:00PM in the Lawndale Community Center, 119 Piedmont Drive, Lawndale, NC
28090.
