Robert Lee Whitworth Sr.

Rev. Robert Lee Whitworth Sr., age 73, of Newton, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his residence on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

Born on February 2, 1952, in Shelby, NC, Robert was the son of the late J.B. Whitworth and Minnie Ovedia Spikes Whitworth. He spent 16 years as a dedicated Production Manager before answering his spiritual calling in 1979. He was ordained as a minister at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, now Release Church, and went on to serve faithfully as Pastor of New Life Christian Fellowship until his retirement in 2018.

Robert had a deep love for singing gospel music, playing his guitar, restoring old school cars, studying and teaching the Word of God, and most importantly, cherishing time with his family and friends. His gentle spirit, strong faith, and devotion to service left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Whitworth Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife, Maria C. Whitworth; his children: four sons, Robert Lee Whitworth Jr., Robert Danyel Whitworth, Spencer Whitworth (Alyssa), all of Hickory, NC; and JR Whitworth (Jessica) of Denver, NC; three daughters, Jennifer Whitworth, Shavon Whitworth both of Charlotte, NC, and Renee Whitworth of Houston, TX.

He also leaves behind two brothers: Forrest Whitworth (Louise) of Shelby, NC, and Larry Whitworth (Terry) of Cherryville, NC; two sisters: Rachel Whitworth of Shelby, NC, Nita Surratt (Joe) of Kings Mountain, NC; and one sister-in-law, Allison Whitworth of Shelby, NC.

Robert's legacy continues through his fourteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several beloved aunts; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

He will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his generous heart, and the love he poured into his family, church, and community. His life was a testament to grace, strength, and service. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Release Church (formally Antioch Baptist Church), 1616 Kings Road, Shelby, NC. Enloe Mortuary was in charge of the services.
