Ruby Mae Wells Upchurch
Ruby Mae Wells Upchurch, age 92 of Roy Eaker Road, Cherryville passed away Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at Carolina Care Center. She was born May 23, 1924 in Rutherford County, North Carolina to the late James Daniel, Sr. and Cleo Butler Wells.
Ruby graduated from Tri-High School in 1942. She attended Asheville College and graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College in 1946 with a degree in education. She began teaching in Hendersonville and Kings Mountain, but the majority of her 30 year career was teaching 4th grade students in Cherryville.
A member of First Presbyterian Church in Cherryville, Ruby was at one time active with the CARE visiting team and the Sallie Quinn Sunday School Class. Ruby enjoyed reading, traveling, the mountains, history, fresh vegetables, and UNC-Tarheel basketball.
She was "Mama" to her children; "Ruby Mae" to her husband and friends; "Mama Ruby" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and "Miss Upchurch" to her students and all were lucky to know her as such. Ruby loved her family, and was especially proud to be a Wells from Rutherford County.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, William O. Upchurch, Jr.; a grandson, Dan Upchurch; a great-granddaughter, Molly Upchurch; and brothers Robert Wells, Lawrence Wells and Frank Wells, Sr.
Ruby is survived by her daughter Mary U. Ferguson (David); son, Mark Upchurch (Angie); grandchildren Matthew Ferguson (Betsy), Alex Ferguson (Delana), Susan F. Carswell (Will), John Ferguson, Will Upchurch and Luke Upchurch; great-grandchildren Ethan Ferguson, Ansley Ferguson, Layla Ferguson and Mary Ellis Upchurch; sister Lula Miller and brother James D. "Sonny" Wells, Jr. (Martha), niece Anna W. Bloomer and nephews Jimmy Wells, Frank Wells, Jr., Michael Miller and Steve Miller.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 25 at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Leonard Bumgardner officiating. Burial will follow at City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 12:30 to 1:45 PM prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 107 W. Academy Street, Cherryville NC 28021 or to the donor's choice.
