Russell Dean Woy Sr.

Russell Dean Woy Sr., 89, passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2022, surrounded by his family and loving wife, Janet, of 64 years. Russell graduated from East Tennessee University, receiving a B.S. in Business Administration. He played on the basketball team and was the university's first All-American. Russell was a veteran and proudly served in the U.S. Army. He married Janet Ann Lewis on June 28, 1958. For most of his career, Russell was employed as an Industrial Engineer for Burlington and Dover Textile Industries.

Russell modeled the life of our savior Jesus Christ. He was a faithful son, husband, father, and brother. Because of his 6'4" frame and humble, gentle demeanor, he was affectionately known as Big Daddy. He enjoyed singing in the choir with his wife and friends and served in various leadership roles. A natural-born leader, people were drawn to his calm and wise guidance. Russell spent his free time playing tennis or working in his workshop. He could build or repair almost anything and carved beautiful wooden crosses for family and friends. Russell's abundant personal and professional success was not held selfishly as he was quick to share his knowledge and experience, particularly when he knew others would benefit. This generosity was reflected in his volunteer activities. He coached basketball at the Shelby City Park, served as the Shelby Tennis Association President, and mentored youth.

Russell is survived by his wife Janet Woy, his daughter Vicky Wilkison of Charlotte, NC, her husband Tim, their children Tory, Cole, MacLane, his wife Amy and their son, great-grand baby, Wesley. Additionally, his daughter Lisa Woy of Cornelius, NC, and his son Rusty Woy of Hickory, NC, his wife Helen, their children Ella Grace and Charlie, and many loving nieces and nephews. Russell is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Victoria Woy, three brothers Charlie, Edgar, Joe and a sister, Lorayne Lester.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be offered to Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 502 W. Sumter St., Shelby, 28150.

A celebration of life service will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 30.
