Sarah Young Mask

Sarah Young Mask, 79, of 514 Goldwater Street Shelby, North Carolina, passed on Monday, April 25, 2022, at the home of her daughter Katrina and son-inlaw, John Goodman surrounded by her family.

Sarah Young Mask was born May 6, 1942, in Boiling Springs, North Carolina to the late Charlie Young and Lillie Mae Ponder. Sarah graduated from Green Bethel High School in the class of 1960. She attended Durham Business College on a scholarship, until her mother fell ill at which time, she returned home to assist her family.

Sarah worked at Douglass High School as secretary, then at the ASCS office. Years later after completing coursework at Cleveland Community College, Mrs. Mask began her career at Duke Energy in the engineering department. She retired after 25 years of service. Initially as a retiree, she served as a foster grandparent at the Cleveland County Girls' Club and local elementary schools.

Sarah joined Green Bethel Baptist Church as a youth. She was active during her younger years. She would later leave and serve at Mundy's Chapel Methodist Church. However, she returned to Green Bethel Baptist where she served in several ministry's: Assistant Church Clerk, member of the Usher Board, Senior Missionary Department, Inspiration Choir, Kitchen Committee, and Assistant Youth Director. She enjoyed gardening, listening to gospel music, spending time with family, and watching college and professional sports.

Sarah was an active member of her community representing Green Bethel Baptist Church, the Minority Health Council sponsored by the Cleveland County Health Department. She also served as the Precinct Judge for the Cleveland County Board of Elections.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband of 57 years David Mask, son David Mask, Jr.; siblings, Louise Young Ross, Doris Young Hunt, Mary Ellen Young and Betty G. Young who were all of Shelby, NC, Charles Young of Forest City, NC, Coleman Young of Rock Hill, SC and Hilton Young of Suffolk, VA.

She leaves to cherish fond memories, two daughters Loretta Mask Campbell of Bowie, MD and Katrina Mask Goodman (John) of Boiling Springs, NC.; four grandchildren, Aunte' K. Mask and David Simmons both of Shelby, NC, Jalen Campbell of Apex, NC and Jillian Campbell of Philadelphia, PA; 5 greatgrandchildren, Jayden Wilson, Xavier Simmons-Petty, Jaleel Smith, Kaylyn Simmons and Amira Simons-Smith all of Shelby, NC: her youngest sister, Sandra Diane Wilson of Shelby; brothers-in- law, James Mask and Charles Hunt both of Shelby, NC and Charles Mask of Miami, Fl; sisters-in -law, Patricia Young Suffolk, Va; Dorothy Mask, Vanessa Mask and Brenda Young Jeter all of Shelby, NC. In addition, she leaves a special niece Patricia Ross Smith of Atlanta, GA., and special nephew, Rodney Strong of Shelby and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at 3:30 PM at Green Bethel Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM until 3:30 PM at the church and at other times at 106 Chambwood Ln. Burial will take place at the Webb Memorial Lawns.
