SECU Awards ‘People Helping People’ Scholarships For CCC

 The State Employees’ Credit Union recently announced the recipients of the SECU Foundation two-year “People Helping People” scholarships for Cleveland Community College. This year’s recipients are Lauren Hensley and Kelsey Brittain.

 Lauren Hensley is the daughter of James and Carmen Hensley of Grover, North Carolina.  She is a 2010 graduate of Blacksburg High School, where she was an honor roll student.  At Blacksburg High, Lauren was also a member of the History Club and Drama Club. She was a leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, served as a Teacher Cadet, and was in Chorus.  Lauren also volunteered for the Junior Miss organization, Operation Christmas Child, Iron City Ministries, and Grover Fire Department fundraising efforts.  Lauren plans to pursue her Associate Degree in Middle Grades Education at Cleveland Community College. 


 Kelsey Brittain is the daughter of Mark and Jeannie Brittain of Shelby, North Carolina.  She is a 2010 graduate of Shelby High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Club.  She was also an NC Scholar and a Junior Marshall.  Currently, she is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program at Cleveland Community College.  She plans to pursue her BSN at Gardner-Webb University after graduating from CCC in the spring of 2012.


 Recipients of the $5,000 scholarship are selected by the SECU scholarship committee and exemplify the membership philosophy of credit unions, and have demonstrated leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement. The State Employees’ Credit Union distributes “People Helping People” scholarships to all of the 58 community colleges in the state of North Carolina.
