NC Age Group Championships Results - This past weekend, nine members of the Sharks team competed at the NC Age Group Championships in Cary, NC. This meet requires qualifying times and brings together the fastest 14 & under swimmers in the state. Even though we only had a small number of swimmers competing, our team finished 24th. And was the 4th highest scoring team in Blue Ridge Swim league and the 2nd highest scoring team West of Charlotte. That’s pretty cool considering we didn’t have any relays competing this weekend.
We had a number of great performances: Garrett Simpson- 35 Points, 6th – 100 Back, 8th – 100 Fly, 11th – 50 Free, 14th– 200 Back, 15th – 50 Free, (5 out 6 best times!); Ashley Stenger- 21 Points, 7th – 100 Free, 9th – 200 Free (7 out of 8 best times!); Parker Campbell- 18 Points, 7th – 200 Back, 11th – 100 Back; Lindsey Martelle- 11 Points, 8th – 100 Breast (Senior Sectional qualifying time!); Davis Kennedy- 1 Point, 16th – 50 Back. NC High School State Championships: This past weekend, Sharks swimmers represented their high schools at the North Carolina 1A/2A and 3A High School State Championship Meets in Cary, NC. This was a big meet for our guys and even though a couple of them headed into the weekend still sick, everyone competed like champs and they turned out some outstanding performances! 1A/2A NC State Meet - On Thursday, the 1A/2A teams started the meet with some awesome swims. Alexandra Martelle was named the Co-MVP of the meet for her 1st place finish in the both the 200 IM and the 100 Breast! Not bad for a freshman. Ari Wallace also placed in the Championship Finals in both the 50 Free- 4th and the 100 Free- 3rd! Great job guys!  Our swimmers also did a great job competing on their school’s relays and swam fast, splitting personal best times! Below is a list of Sharks swimmers who scored in the top 16: Chase High: Evan Morse 10th- 100 Fly. Shelby High: Sarah Casaday 11th- 50 Free, 12th- 100 Free; Erin Riggs 16th- 500 Free; David Roby 10th- 100 Back. Thomas Jefferson: Ann Huston 13th- 100 Fly; Alexandra Martelle 1st- 200 IM, 1st- 100 Breast; Ari Wallace 3rd- 100 Free, 4th- 50 Free.  3A State Championship Meet- The 1A/2A swimmers got a great weekend started on Thursday and the 3A swimmers picked up where they left off on Saturday. Garrett Simpson swam his way into the championship final with a 8th place finish in the 100 Back and was fighting for a win in the consolation final of the 100 Fly when he choked on water at the 75. He recovered quickly but it was too late and fell back to 16th. Abbey Bragg, Austin Toney, and Kendall Corbett all had solid swims the morning and qualified for consolation finals in the evening. Great job racing guys.
This is a list of Sharks swimmers who scored in the top 16: Crest High: Garrett Simpson 8th- 100 Back, 16th- 100 Fly; Kings Mountain High: Abbey Bragg 16th- 100 Back; Austin Toney 12th- 100 Breast. RS Central: Kendall Corbett 12th- 100 Back. Senior Champ Results January 27-30: This past weekend Alexandra Martelle and Austin Toney represented the Sharks team at the NC Senior Championships in Cary. This meet is for swimmers ages 15 and over and requires qualifying times. Alexandra and Austin combined to score enough points to finish 16th in the state as a team, not bad for just two swimmers. Alexandra had the best meet for a Shark at this meet in a long time, with a 2nd place finish in the 100 Breast, 4th place in the 200 IM and 9th place in the 200 Breast (even though her time ended up being the 2nd fastest overall time!) Austin swam a best time as a Shark in the 100 Breast and finished 15th overall. Congratulations guys!
