Shelby American Legion Contest Winners

Gabe Turner of Ellenboro, NC is the winner of the Shelby American Legion Post 82 High School Oratorical Contest. Jacob Camp was first runner up.
Turner, a junior at Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy, is the son of Tommy and Connie Turner of Ellenboro, NC. He plans to attend college and study music.
Camp, a senior at Crest High, is the son of Mrs. Laurana Camp and Jeffery Camp. He plans to attend Davidson College, where he will play football, and eventually will attend medical school.
Gabe Turner received a gold medal and a one hundred dollar cash prize. Jacob Camp received a silver medal and a fifty dollar cash prize. Turner advances to District Competition.
Contestants had to deliver a 10-minute prepared speech on the U.S. Constitution and then give a 5 minute speech on one of the amendments. Officials were District Court Judge Ali Paksoy; local attorney Greg McIntyre; and Tajsha Eaves, an instructor at Cleveland Community College. Retired magistrate Doug Gold and retired Army Officer Stephen Jolly (Medical Corps) were timekeepers.
The Post 82 contest was held Saturday, January 9th, in the fellowship hall of Ascension Lutheran Church in Shelby. A number of local people attended the competition.
The District Contest will be held Saturday, January 16, at the American Legion post in Kings Mountain.
