Shelby Businesses Raise Money For MDA
Prominent members of the Shelby business community came together on Thursday, November 1st, to be locked up at the Owl’s Eye Vineyard and Winery. These business executives and community leaders have been accused of having a big heart and will be arrested and serve time in a mock jail at the winery to raise bail for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).  This year’s event raised over $41,000 for local families served by MDA! The top “Jailbird” for the day was Sheila Bradley from Trendsetters Salon, raising $2,020!

The fundraising program referred to, as a “Lock-Up” is MDA’s premier fund-raiser nationwide.  Locally, it is critical to the success of MDA’s fundraising and research efforts.  Special thanks to Owl’s Eye Winery and Vineyard for serving as the Jail and Site Sponsor of the event, the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Department, Shelby Police Department, and the Shelby Fire Department for providing transportation for our participants, and Food Lion, Dressing on the Side Catering, Little Caesar’s, Papa John’s, the Pancake House, Ruby Tuesday’s, Sagebrush,  and Sweezy House for serving as the day’s gourmet Bread and Water Sponsors.

Funds raised enable MDA to continue providing direct services to local children and adults with neuromuscular diseases.  In addition to a world wide research program, MDA provides assistance with the purchase of wheelchairs and leg braces, and offers a Summer Camp program for children ages 6 to 17 with muscular dystrophy.  Free medical services are also available at the MDA ALS/Neuromuscular Clinic located at Carolinas Medical Center for individuals diagnosed with any of the 43 diseases covered by MDA.
