Shelby To Host Youth Sports Tournament
Shelby City Park will host five Tar Heel Leagues State Girl’s Fast-Pitch Softball State Tournaments July 18th through 21st. These tournaments will feature 5 Shelby host teams and combine to have a total of 39 teams with nearly 600 players and coaches participating in the 4-day events. The tournaments consist of twelve 8 & under teams; eight teams in each of the 10 & under, 12 & under and 14 & under; and three teams in the 17 & under age bracket.
Several hundred spectators are expected to be on hand daily until the Sunday championship games. There will be a total of over 70 games played at both the Ballfield Complex and the Recreation and Sports Complex.
Opening ceremonies for all teams will be held on Thursday, July 18th at 12:30pm at the Sports Complex.
This will be the largest youth sports tournament ever played at City Park and the local motels will be booked to the maximum with over 300 rooms already reserved for teams and families. These teams will come from all across the state from the coast to the mountains and also will patronize our restaurants and businesses.
David Fisher, Parks and Recreation Programs Superintendent commented “there is a lot of work being done to make this a memorable experience for everyone involved.”
Charlie Holtzclaw, Parks and Recreation Director, said “we view this as 600 families visiting Shelby and would like to invite everyone in the community to come out and display the local hospitality that we are very well known for.”
Names of the communities represented in the State Tournaments along with brackets will be available soon as local District Tournament winners are determined. For all tournament information and updates visit www.cityofshelby.com/parks
