Stephen Weldon McKnight

SHELBY-Stephen Weldon McKnight, 66, went home to be with his Lord, Mon., Dec. 26, 2016, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late William and Gladys Carter McKnight. He served in the Marines during Vietnam, was a faithful member of Blessed Way Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school for the teen boys, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He worked at Cone Mill in Cliffside, and loved his family, grandchildren, and church family, for whom he fought his cancer courageously.

PRECEDED: In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Andrew "Stevie" McKnight; and brothers, Kenneth and Dennis McKnight.

SURVIVED: He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Joyce Cooper McKnight, of the home; son, Timothy McKnight and wife Becky of Shelby; sister, Rhonda Smith of Largo, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Tammy McKnight Bumgardner and husband J.R. of Lawndale; grandchildren, Andrew, Samuel, and Nathaniel McKnight, Josh and Makayla Bumgardner; sisters-in-law, Lou Ann McKnight of Lawndale, Pat Hamrick and husband Dennis of Shelby, Rhonda Cooper of Shelby, Barbara Strickland and husband Greg of Hickory, and Evelyn Stephens and husband Terry of Hickory; brothers-in-law, Don Cooper and wife Cynda of Lancaster, SC, and Ronald Cooper of Hickory; his special support group while taking chemo, Mike Frost and wife Net of Golden Valley, Tom Smith of Shelby, Peggy Poole and husband Barry of Cornelius, and Mike Drake and wife Lucy of Stallings; and numerous cousins and church family who stood by his side.

VISITATION: The family will receive friends Thurs., 6-7:30pm, at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home

FUNERAL SERVICES: Funeral services will be held 2pm, Friday, at Blessed Way Baptist Church in Lawndale

OFFICIATING: Revs. Tommy Cook and Len Byers will officiate

BURIAL: will follow in the church cemetery with military honors
