Steven Keith Melton, age 68, died Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Hospice Wendover. Born in Rutherford County on October 14, 1949, he was the son of the late Eugene Melton and Sara Bridges Melton. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, former Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir, and served various other committees. Steve also served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was a graduate of Cleveland Tech, as well as Gardner Webb University. He worked for Doran Textiles for many years, and later taught Business at Burns Middle School. He was a member of the Jake Kiser golf group, and he was a fan of Duke basketball and Braves baseball.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Bright and Evelyn London.

Steve is survived by his wife of 37 years, Gay Helms Melton of Shelby; step-daughter, Gay Waynette Goodson of Greensboro; two sisters: Carolyn Luckadoo and husband Charles of Rutherfordton, and Ann Russ and husband Wayne of Cherryville; as well as three brothers: David Melton and wife Thelma of Bostic, Billy Melton and wife Evelyn of Forest City, Jerry Melton and wife Ann of Shelby, special friends Wayne Appling and Reid Jolly, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be held 7:00 pm Monday, October 15, 2018 at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Timothy Simms officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 5 pm until 7 pm. Burial will be held 10:30 am on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, Sunset Cemetery with military honors.
