Sybil Bridges Willis

Sybil Bridges Willis, age 84, of Shelby, NC passed away on April 7, 2023.

Sybil was born in 1939 to Charles Abernathy Bridges, Sr. and Sarah Kathleen Whisnant in Cleveland County, NC. During high school, she was a member of the 4-H club and participated in many Guernsey cattle competitions, where she met her future husband, Jerry Willis. After graduating from Polkville High School, she earned her Associates Degree in Education from Appalachian State University

In 1959, Sybil married Jerry, an Army officer, in Polkville, NC. They were lucky enough to enjoy 64 years together as husband and wife. Sybil's life with Jerry took her all around the world. They lived in more than 20 locations, including Germany and Iran, with their three children. She helped enrich the lives of all military families through charitable endeavors and social activities as an active participant in the Army Officer Wives Club. She was an avid reader and spent many hours crafting. They returned to Shelby in 1987 to care for family and reconnect with the community. In her last months, visits from the Shelby Township Library always made her smile.

Sybil is predeceased by her parents, her sister Betty Joyce Peace and her brother Charles A Bridges Jr. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, LTC(Ret) Jerry T Willis and their children; Jeffrey Willis and wife Mary Kelley of Raleigh, Sarah and husband Luke Helbling of Callaway, MD and Jennifer and husband Steve Wynn of Ashburn, VA. Her family includes seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; John and wife Katherine of Louisville, KY and their daughter Anne, and Caroline of Dublin, Ireland; Daniel and wife Allie of Edgewater, MD, and Laura of Gaithersburg, MD; Alex of Dallas, TX, Emily and husband Stephen of Monterey, CA, and Eric of Arlington, VA. She was loved tremendously and will be remembered fondly.

The family will receive friends on Friday, April 14, 2023, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home, Fallston.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at 11:00 am at Polkville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harry Queen and Rev. Patrick Willis officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made directly to the Polkville UMC Building Fund, c/o Polkville United Methodist Church, PO Box 9, Polkville, NC 28136.
