Thelma Martin Hughes, 89, died Thursday, November 9, 2023 at White Oak Manor in Shelby.

Born in Cherokee County, SC she was the daughter of the late Boyd and Mattie Pearson Martin. Thelma worked as a CNA for 30 years and was a member of Faith Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and gardening. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband J.C. Hughes; brothers, David Martin and Noah Lee Martin; and sister, Wilma Lail. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Borders; son, Russell Martin; and sister, Bonnie Walker, all of Shelby; brother, Trudy Martin of Cherokee Falls, SC; grandchildren, Marie Jackson and husband Mike, Josh Borders and wife Erin and Melissa McCleave, all of Shelby; great-grandchildren, Macayla Jackson, Jesse Borders and Luna McCleavel and niece, Paulette Owens of Shelby. Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M., Saturday, November 11, 2023 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Allen officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Faith Baptist Church Cemetery.
