Thomas Franklin McCoy

Thomas Franklin McCoy, 79, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at Carolina Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. Born July 23, 1946, in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Paul Eugene McCoy and Mary Sisk McCoy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant brothers, as well as special friends, Ronnie Edmonson and Kenneth McSwain.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Vallery Devine McCoy; two sons, Thomas McCoy IV and Brian McCoy (Mary); and his cherished grandchildren, Makenna, Mitchell, Matthew, Jordan, Meleah, Colton, and Bella. He is further survived by special sisters-in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews who will continue to honor his memory.

Tom was a proud graduate of Shelby High School, Class of 1964, and continued his education at Gaston College and Cleveland Community College. He honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era until his discharge in 1972.

He worked for FII Celanese Corporation for more than 30 years with perfect attendance until his retirement. Tom coached the Marion Elementary School Red Raiders football team for 10 years.

A devoted member of Elizabeth Baptist Church, he faithfully served on the Building and Grounds Committee and greatly cared for his Sunday school class.

Tom had a passion for classic cars and was a founding member of the Blue Oval Ford Club. He enjoyed participating in local charity car shows, often showcasing his beloved 1968 Mustang.He was also a member of American Legion Post 82 and found great enjoyment in watching baseball with his beloved wife, Vallery, especially East Carolina games, the American Legion World Series, and his hometown Shelby Golden Lions.

Above all, he treasured time spent with his grandchildren, especially during visits and beach trips. He also enjoyed simple joys with them locally such as searching for arrowheads and rocks and placing pennies on railroad tracks.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM on Friday, April 24, 2026, at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Elizabeth Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Dr. Rit Varriale and Rev. Lewis Smith. Burial, with full military honors, will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Baptist Children's Homes of North Carolina.
