Union Elementary School Wins Rhythm & Roots Run School Participation Award!
Union Elementary School can thank a group of young runners led by their running club teacher, Holli Goforth for winning the $200 School Participation award at the Earl Scruggs Center second annual Rhythm & Roots Run.  For most of the students, this was their first race.  Mrs. Goforth, an accomplished runner, promotes running to students by helping them train and get involved with community runs.
The school participation award was a new feature of the November 5th event with a prize for the K-12 school with the highest number of students participating in the event.  Plaster Family Dentistry sponsored the award this year allowing the winning school to receive a trophy as well as a $200 prize for its PTO.
The second annual Rhythm & Roots Run, a 5k and a 10k race was held Saturday, November 5, 2011.  The Run which started and ended at the Don Gibson Theatre will raise awareness for the future Earl Scruggs Center: Music & Stories from the American South.  Co-chairs Trip Boinest and Will Plaster volunteered to lead the organizational efforts for the Run in part because last year’s inaugural event went so well and they wanted to help make the event even better.  Both Trip and Will have children who are runners and realize the benefits to youth of participating in a formal run.
Tater Family Traveling Circus provided live Americana music to send off the runners and welcome them back to the finish.  The route wound through the beautiful tree lined streets of Historic Uptown Shelby.  The 10k split off and continued through Sunset Cemetery passing Don Gibson’s monument and then to the new Sports and Recreation Complex at Shelby City Park before winding back to the Don Gibson Theatre.  Photos are available on Destination Cleveland County’s facebook page.
