Vernon "Hayes" Bishop died November 7, 2018, at Atrium Health-Cleveland.

He was born in Cullowhee, NC on July 8, 1933, to Rev. J. Edgar Bishop and Gracie Dills Bishop. After serving in the U.S. Army for two years, he attended Gardner Webb and Brevard College and was a graduate of A.S.U. He retired from Celanese after 28 years.

Hayes was happiest when singing and playing his guitar. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. When he was president of the Bayliss Sunday School Class, he liked to open the class meeting with an amusing story. He kept his sense of humor, even after developing dementia.

Hayes is survived by his wife, Ernestine Bridges Bishop, daughter Sheila Adams (David), grandson Brandon Adams, granddaughter Morgan Adams, brother Harold Bishop (Barbara), aunt Irene Hooper, and nephew Michael Bishop (Natalie).

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 2:00 pm in the sanctuary of Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Rev. Randy Blanton officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Epworth Building.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Aldersgate U.M.C., 1207 W. Dixon Blvd., Shelby, NC 28152
