Volunteers clean up half ton of debris from First Broad River

On August 29th, Boy Scout Troop 118 members and parents and Keep Shelby Beautiful volunteers chose to spend their Saturday morning picking up litter in the First Broad River in Shelby.
As flow volume increases in a creek or stream, debris is washed downstream until it is trapped or the flow volume normalizes This causes litter to be distributed into locations that are difficult to access without physically entering the river. The volunteers jumped into the river and picked up approximately 1,000 pounds of litter, including 13 scrap tires, on the quarter mile stretch of river that flows from the City of Shelby raw water intake above the Grover Street bridge to just below the Grover Street bridge.
This river clean-up event was part of the Public Involvement and Participation goal of the City of Shelby's Phase II Stormwater Permit. This is the first of several events the Stormwater Department is planning for the First Broad River. Our goal is to protect the waterways and promote water quality within the City of Shelby. Volunteer service is an important way that anyone can contribute to improving the quality of life in the community.
Thank you Boy Scout Troop 118 members and parents and Keep Shelby Beautiful volunteers!
The next clean-up event is scheduled for September 19, 2015, from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at the Grover Street bridge over the First Broad River. Come out and join us.
