Wilbur Gene Shytle, Sr. ,93, of Shelby, passed away peacefully at his home on October 20, 2022.

Gene was born in Cleveland County and was the son of the late Wilbur Pinkney Shytle and Bessie Lee Morrison Shytle.

In addition to his parents, Gene is preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ann Shytle; three siblings, Bertha Hamrick, Bill Shytle, Louise Canipe and his daughter, Marsha Babb.

Gene served in the United States Army in his youth and later spent most of his career as a commercial freight hauler for Carolina Freight, Inc. and Akers Motorlines.

Gene was a member of the Shelby Optimist Club and was a active member of Lafayette Street Church where he faithfully served as Usher and a member of the Methodist Men service group.

In his free time, Gene enjoyed visiting and taking trips to Ocean Isle Beach with his family, taking long walks around his neighborhood and being involved with his loving church community.

Gene is survived by his loving wife Linda Morrison, son Chip Shytle and wife Evelyn of Laurinburg, NC. In addition, he is also survived by his loving Grandchildren: Billy Crowder (Michelle), Michael Crowder (Lynne), Kitch Deaton (Grant), Mary Elizabeth Peacock (Brian), Will Shytle and Katie Gardner (Matt), 14 Great Grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews and friends, Gene leaves behind his beloved pets; two dogs, Hunter and Levi and, cat, Lucy.

A funeral service for Gene will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 23, 2022 at Lafayette Street Church of Shelby with the Reverend Kathy Houser officiating.

Visitation with the family will take place at the church an hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at Sunset Cemetery in Shelby, NC with military honors provided the United States Military.
