William Earle Jack

Bill was born on November 17, 1927, in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania, the only child of the late Earl Claudius Jack and Evelyn Jean Stewart Jack.

Bill graduated from Vandergrift High School in 1945 and from Grove City College, Grove City, Pennsylvania in 1951 with a degree in business and accounting. He was a Lifetime Member of the Alumni Lettermen's Association awarded by the college for his swimming talent.

After high school, where Bill had been a competitive swimmer, he joined the Navy where he took his swimming skills and was trained as a Navy Frogman (known today as the Navy Seals.) He was stationed in San Francisco as a member of the Underwater Demolition Team to be sent to Japan when World War Il ended in August 1945. Bill served in the Navy from 1945-47.

Bill's career took him to several plants in the US which were part of U.S. Steel Corporation. Coming into his professional life as the "age of technology" was just beginning, his contribution was developing cost accounting systems and installing them on computers. In the 1960s, Bill chose to enter a new business and moved south to Fiber Industries. As his career continued, Bill was involved with setting up plants in Salisbury and Greenville, SC. Eventually he was in the corporate office of Celanese in Charlotte. For two years, Bill was employed with Beaunit Industries in Raleigh and later other textile and oil companies in Cleveland County. Following his business career, which involved much traveling, he chose retirement in 1991. Bill's favorite time in retirement was spent enjoying coffee with friends on a regular basis at Hannah's Coffee House.

Bill was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and served as church treasurer for several years. Bill sang in church choirs from his college days until just a few years ago.

As a musician, Bill played trumpet and bugle in the Syria Temple Band of Pittsburgh and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Band of Latrobe PA. He played first bugle in the Vandergrift Thunderers Drum and Bugle Corps who were PA state champions in the late 1950s for consecutive years.

As a thirty second degree Mason for sixty-five years, he was currently a member of Kiskiminitas Lodge #617 in Vandergrift PA; Gourgas Lodge of Perfection (Scottish Rite) of the Valley of Pittsburgh; and Syria Temple of Pittsburgh. Presently his Shrine membership was with the Oasis Shrine of Charlotte. Bill was a former member of the Shelby Kiwanis Club.

Among Bill's happy times were cheering for the Steelers football team and Duke's basketball team and listening to the 40s big band era music. He was honored to fly to Washington to see the World War I Memorial, a trip sponsored by the Rotary's Flight of Honor in 2011.
