Yvonne Gleaves Beam

Mrs. Yvonne Gleaves Beam, 76, of 2407 Elizabeth Ave. Shelby, NC departed this life on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at Kings Mountain Hospice House.  She was born on April 9, 1936 in Cleveland County, NC to the late Leo Vontilzer Gleaves and Mary Lee Borders Gleaves.

Yvonne was a graduate of Cleveland High School in Shelby.  She received a BS from Knoxville College, Knoxville, TN and a MS degree from UNC Charlotte.  While at Knoxville College, she was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society and was listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.  She taught in the public schools for 37 years beginning in Cleveland, Ohio but most of her years were in the Shelby City Schools.

Yvonne was a lifelong member of Durham United Methodist Church where she served for some time as church organist.  She was a charter member of the Audacian Club and served until her health failed.

Her hobbies included traveling and working in her flowers and vegetable garden.

She is survived by her husband, James “Jim” Beam; a son, James “Chip” Beam, Jr. and his wife Marsha of Shelby; a daughter, Constance Beam; two sisters, Francelia McKindra and her husband, Clayton of Columbia, MD and Elma Ann Wright of Shelby; 3 granddaughters, Gabrielle Beam of Charlotte, NC and Victoria and Paris Beam both of Shelby; a special sister-in-law, Christine Harrill of Caroleen, NC; special aunts, Shirley Borders of Charlotte and Gwendolyn  Robinson of Kings Mountain; special friends, Helen Barrow, Ruby Cline and Rosa Borders all of Shelby and Carolyn Black of Winston-Salem, NC and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Durham United Methodist Church with Revs. Aldana Allen and Lee Bynum officiating.  Burial will take place at Cleveland Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM at S.T. Enloe Memorial Chapel.  The family would like to express thanks and appreciation to the staff at White Oak Manor, to doctors and nursing staff at Cleveland Regional Medical Center and to the doctors and staff at Hospice House of Kings Mountain.  Memorials can be made to Durham United Methodist Church, P.O.
