Communities In Schools Celebrates Dental Health Month
To celebrate  February as Dental Health Month, Joy Shuford, the Public Health Dental Hygienist for Cleveland County, who is employed with the Oral Health Division of DHHS along with various local dental offices and Communities In Schools, will participate in Give Kids A Smile.  Area dentists donate their time and resources to provide dental sealants at no cost to prevent tooth decay.  The Give Kids a Smile program started in 1998 as “Seal the State in ‘98” and has been in existence ever since.
Cleveland County third graders participating in Give Kids A Smile visit one of the partnering dentists to have dental sealants applied.   This year, in 2012, Drs. Matthew Borders, William Claytor, John Crosland, Pauline Cahill, Kendalyn Lutz-Craver and James S. Wilson contributed their time by going to the schools to screen  students.  Approximately 150 – 200 students will participate as the result of this donated service from Drs. Phillip Jiamachello, Pauline Cahill, Brenton Young, Bryan Baker, Stephen Baker,  James S. Wilson, Craig Thompson, Douglas Stroud, Kendalyn Lutz-Craver and  Sara Karner.
Cleveland County is very fortunate to have such dedicated and loyal volunteers to help make a difference in many children’s lives.  Good oral health is essential to a healthy body and mind.  Thanks to all who participate in this program.
Communities In Schools will have a billboard in uptown Shelby during the month of February 2012 to celebrate Dental Health Month.
