Crest FFA’s “Goat Tenders”
Crest FFA members standing (l to r) are Lisa Humphries, Justin Henson, Ryan Lancaster, Landon Costner and Josh Bolin. Up front is Matt Harris, Crest FAA head teacher and Johnathan Henson. The group is known as “the goat tenders”.
Matt Harris graduated from Chase High School in 1994, then became a student at NC State and received a BS in Agriculture & Extension Education, graduating cum laude in 1999. He then obtained his Masters Degree from NC State in 2001. Matt was named Southwest NCATA Regional Teacher of the Year in 2009 and 2011 and Cleveland County Schools Teacher of the Year in 2010 and 2011.
He loves what he does and his FFA students love him. They will tell you: “He deserves all his awards and is more of a friend than a teacher”. “He makes it fun!” One of his students said: “He’s the only reason that I’m here”.
The present FFA program at Crest High School is all about goats. Their herd consist of nineteen currently and more are on the way. This program requires a tremendous amount of dedication year round, because the goats must be tended to three times daily.
Matt says his job is to teach his students responsibility, new skills and give them lots of self esteem. This Crest FFA program is obviously one of the best. Together, with help from his wife Kaye, Matt Harris is to be congratulated on a job well done.
