The Cleveland County Republican Party recently conducted a two month-long “baby shower” for the Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC) of Cleveland County.
Sharon Martin, Community Outreach Coordinator for Hospice Cleveland County, was recently awarded the Jack Stickley Humanitarian Award from the Lawndale Branch of the North Carolina Lions Club. This award was created in honor of Jack Stickley, North Carolina’s first President of Lions Clubs International.

Mr. Bobby Gene Oates, 69, of 1117 Mary’s Grove Church Rd., Kings Mountain, NC departed this life on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at Wendover Hospice in Shelby, NC.
Mr. Bobby J. “Bob” Ross, 71, of 1405 Kings Rd. Shelby, NC retired from his earthly life to join his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 15, 2013 at 12:40pm, while in the care of Hospice in Cleveland County, NC.
Clarence G. Lovelace, age 91, of Forest City, NC, died Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at the Hospice House of Rutherford County.
Glenn F. Cash, age 76, of Mountain View Drive, Forest City, NC, died Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at Rutherford Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Grace Helena Elmore King, 94, formerly of 118 Henry Street in Lawndale, NC was born on February 1, 1919 in Cleveland County, North Carolina.
Ms. Mary Elizabeth “Libby” Woods, 47, formerly of 506 W. Graham St. Apt. B in Shelby, NC departed this life on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Hospice House in Kings Mountain, NC.
Even though it’s only August, the deer hunters are getting prepared for another season. While it may be a few weeks until the season actually opens, there is much to do in order to be ready for opening day – especially if you hunt with bow and arrow. Right now I’m checking trail cameras, hanging tree stands and trying to figure out where the deer are likely to be early in the season. And it is not always where one might think.

Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1207 W. Dixon Blvd., Shelby, is having a breakfast the second Saturday of each month, 7-9:30am. We serve eggs, grits, sausage gravy, pancakes, and french toast (made to order), country ham, sausage, bacon, and livermush with coffee and juice. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children. All you can eat. Money goes to our building fund and is sponsored by The United Methodist men’s and women’s groups.

After continued outbreaks of pertussis (whooping cough) across the state, state health officials are encouraging people of all ages to be immunized against this highly contagious but preventable respiratory disease. As of August 14, state public health officials had tracked 326 cases of pertussis, including 50 cases in infants.
Mike Duncan, Vice President of Number Three Ruritan Club, presents Clyde (Tripp) Hastings, 2013 graduate of Crest High School, with a $500.00 scholarship. Tripp will enter Gardner Webb University in September of this year. Hannah Beason also received the same scholarshiop and will be attending ASU.
Jim Holland, Assistant Commander of American Legion Post 82 in Shelby seems to have conquered the art of growing big sunflowers. Shown above, Jim gazes at his huge sunflower, grown in his backyard garden. It grew to be over 13 feet tall.
With lots of encouragement from her mother, seven year old Brooke Morgan Porter keeps very busy. She obviously is a good student of any program she gets involved in. Brooke models, does cheering leading, dance and piano and now she has received a certificate of completion as a Junior Life Guard.
Post 82 Commander Ned Cash left, and Albert Mancinelli
Shelby Post 82 of the American Legion honored Albert Mancinelli with a certificate for 65 years continuous membership in the American Legion. Mancinelli served in the US Army in Europe during World War II. Post Commander Ned Cash presented the certificate.
